Georg Wrba

Georg Wrba ( born January 3, 1872 in Munich, † January 9, 1939 in Dresden ) was a German sculptor and graphic artist. He was one of the most important German sculptors of the 20th century and created more than 3000 plastic works, including an employee of the kennel building workshop.

Life

Georg Wrba was born the son of a blacksmith in 1872 in Munich. His younger brother Max Wrba worked in Dresden as an architect.

His education began at Wrba Bradl Jacob the Elder and his son Jacob Bradl the Younger. From 1891 to 1896 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. After a sojourn in Italy ( with Egon Rheinberger ), made ​​possible by a travel grant of Prince Regent Luitpold, he settled in 1897 as an independent sculptor in Munich down and was director of the city sculptor school. 1906 and 1907 he worked in Berlin, where he created architectural sculptures for the architect Ludwig Hoffmann and Alfred Messel. After moving to Dresden he taught from 1907 to 1930 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. He joined the Dresden sculptor school with the reform ideas of the Deutscher Werkbund. At Dresdner artists' association " The Guild ", he was a founding member. This went for an interaction of various art forms. Ornamentation, they rejected as an end in itself, painting and sculpture should be combined with the architecture. In Dresden he built, among other things Marie- Gey's fountain near the main train station in Dresden's southern suburb, the physician Dr. Heinze for his early deceased wife, a student, had donated to the Academy of Arts. 1910 made ​​Wrba an opinion for the restoration and completion of the missing parts of the kennel. He directed the work of 53 stone sculptors between 1911 to 1933 and created numerous groups of figures after living model for the kennel.

Georg Wrba died on January 9, 1939 in Dresden. According to him, a street is named. His grave is located in the forest cemetery in Munich.
