Volkspark Friedrichshain

The People's Friedrichshain Park is a recreation area in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain. It was created in 1846 as the first municipal park in Berlin. It is bordered on the north by the Bötzowviertel in the district of Prenzlauer Berg.

History

The Friedrichshain is the first municipal park in Berlin. From an idea by Peter Joseph, the Berlin City Council decided in 1840 on the occasion of the Jubilee of Frederick II to build a recreation park for the densely populated eastern Berlin.

Mid- 19th century to 1945

The design of the oldest part was 1846-48 to plans by Johann Heinrich Gustav Meyer. 1848, the cemetery of the Märzgefallenen been created in the park. The hospital in Friedrichshain was 1868-74, designed by Martin Gropius and Heino forging. To compensate for the associated loss of land 1874 /75 of Meyer Park, now director of horticulture from Berlin to extend the New Grove.

After twelve years of construction, one of the most beautiful fountains of the city in 1913 with the Märchenbrunnen completed. The architect was the longtime Berlin city planner Ludwig Hoffmann. The ten groups of figures after Tales of the Brothers Grimm was created by the sculptor Ignatius Taschner, numerous other sculptures by Josef Rauch and George Wrba.

The construction of the flak towers in 1941 and the following air raids destroyed the old trees almost completely. 1946, the two bunkers were blown up and the ruins 1946-50 filled with rubble and covered. In the resulting rubble ( " Mont Klamott " ) were planted during the park renovation, designed by Reinhold Lingner.

From 1945: outdoor theater and swimming stadium

In 1950, the outdoor theater was built in the southern area of the park. In addition, they built 1949-1951 in preparation for the III. World Festival of Youth and Students in the place of a previously existing sports field in the New Grove Swimming Stadium in Friedrichshain, in 1952 the name of the athlete Karl Friedrich Friesen received. It was an open-air facility with two pools: a 5 meter deep pool for diving towers and a 50 -meter swimming pool with eight competition lanes. On the long sides with the help of war debris bleachers for 8,000 visitors were installed. By 1963 the swimming pool with a collapsible wheeled shelter was provided for the winter, but this was done improperly and was too low. In this stadium, school swimming events, training and competitions were held, but it was also used for other mass events such as a performance by Hauff and Henkler 1973 on the occasion of the Tenth World Festival of Youth and Students. Both the unrenovated condition of the water basin and the unkempt bleachers led from 1999 to demolish the entire system. In yet received Park are the two pillars of the western entrance with their lanterns. They were produced in the workshop of Karl Souradny in 1951.

In GDR times, originated in Friedrichshain also an " Indian Village ", which was used for the design of holiday games.

Memorials, the SEZ and a peace bell

21st Century: Renewed reconstruction and a new monument to Frederick the Great

From 1995 to 2004, a comprehensive reconstruction of the park and its facilities. A reproduction cast in 1848 and incurred after the 2nd World War, probably stolen bronze bust of Frederick II was placed on the excavated original round column in 2000 on the historic site again. After the demolition of the swimming stadium, the reconstruction of the Neues grove was possible. Things to Do

The little one (48 m high) and the Great bunker hill ( Mont Klamott, 78 m high) each have a viewing platform. On the eastern slope of the small bunker hill was laid out a welcome and much-used toboggan run after the completion of Trümmerauffahrung among others.

The outdoor stage is used in the summer months from Radio One Freiluftkino Friedrichshain. In addition to playing and sunbathing are a beach volleyball court, a half pipe, basketball and football courts, a climbing or bouldering rocks, a circular course for inline skaters and a separate track for joggers available for sports activities. For children there are several playgrounds.

In the New Grove there is an ancient oak trees, individual trees are designated as a natural monument.
