George A. Hormel

George Albert Hormel ( born December 4, 1860 in Buffalo, New York, † June 5, 1946 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American entrepreneur and founder of the food manufacturer Hormel.

Hormel was the son of German immigrant John G. Hormel and Susanna Decker in Buffalo, New York. 1865 the family moved to Toledo, Ohio. Due to the failure of his father's business in 1873 he had to leave school and take part-time jobs. Two years later he went to Chicago, where he worked with in the meat-processing industry of his uncle. He then worked for a time as a wool merchant. In 1887 he moved to Austin, Minnesota, where he founded together with Albrect Friedrich operation for the production and sale of meat products. Since Frederick was against a further expansion of the farm, separated in September 1891, the paths of the two. Hormel bought an old dairy building and ran his own business continued under the name George A. Hormel & Company. The company grew steadily and had grown up in the 1920s into a major companies within the industry in the Midwestern United States. 1929 George Hormel handed over the management to his son Jay Catherwood Hormel. For the 50th anniversary of the company founded George and Jay Hormel 1941, The Hormel Foundation and The Hormel Institute, which researches carried out in collaboration with the University of Minnesota.

George Hormel was married to Lillian Belle Gleason. They had one son.
