George Alencherry

George Cardinal Alencherry, born as Geevarghese Alencherry ( born April 19, 1945 in Thuruthy, Changanassery, Kottayam District ) is of Indian Major Archbishop of Ernakulam- Angamaly and head of the faithful of the Syro -Malabar rite.

Life

George Alencherry, the sixth child of a family of ten children, studied philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Seminary in Aluva, Kerala. He received on 19 November 1972, the ordination. In 1986 he became director of the Pastoral Orientation Centre.

After the election by the Synod of Bishops of the Syro -Malabar Church, he was appointed on 11 November 1996 by Pope John Paul II, the first bishop of Thuckalay. He received on 2 February 1997, the episcopal consecration by the Archbishop of Changanacherry, Joseph Powathil; Were co-consecrators Lawrence Ephraem Thottam, Bishop of Marthandom, and Mathew Vattackuzhy, Bishop of Kanjirapally.

George Alencherry was chosen on 24 May 2011 as Major Archbishop of Ernakulam- Angamaly of the Großerzbistums and therefore as head of the Syro -Malabar Church by the Synod and Pope Benedict XVI. confirmed on May 26.
