George Andrews (mathematician)

George Eyre Andrews ( born December 4, 1938 in Salem, Oregon) is an American mathematician who is engaged in analysis, combinatorics and number theory.

Andrews received his doctorate in 1964 at the University of Pennsylvania with Hans Rademacher. He is since 1981 Evan Pugh Professor of Mathematics at Pennsylvania State University, University Park, where he has since 1964 (then as an assistant professor ). 1982-1992, he was also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Waterloo. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Strasbourg (1983 ), at the New Zealand Mathematical Society and at the Australian National University ( 1983).

Andrews dealt in particular with the theory of partitions ( Zerfällungen ), with special functions and hypergeometric series. He was, among other things out the "lost notebook " by S. Ramanujan that he had found in the archives of the University of Cambridge in 1976.

1990/91 he was a visiting scientist at the Thomas Watson Research Center of IBM. 1982/83 he was a Guggenheim Fellow.

He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2009 he was president of the American Mathematical Society (AMS ), whose fellow he is. In 1999 he received the Centennial Award from the University of Pennsylvania and 1980 he held the Hendrick Lecture of the Mathematical Association of America. He is a member of Australian, New Zealand and the Edinburgh Mathematical Society.

Andrews has been married since 1960 and has three children.
