George Baillie-Hamilton, 12th Earl of Haddington

George Baillie - Hamilton, 12th Earl of Haddington KT, MC, TD (* September 18, 1894, † 17 April 1986) was a Scottish peer and British military.

Life

Haddington was the son of General George Baillie - Hamilton, Lord Binning. His training took place on Eton College and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst instead. During World War II, he was awarded the Military Cross, he was captain of the Royal Scots Greys and served as the major in the 19th ( Lothians and Border Horse ) scout car - company in the Territorial Army. He was also a member of the Royal Company of Archers. He succeeded his grandfather in 1917 as Earl of Haddington, as his father had died before. The family tradition includes many Covenanters, who favored the Scottish Presbyterianism and to oppose the introduction of the Anglican state church in Scotland.

During World War II he was Wing Commander ( Lieutenant Colonel ) in the Royal Air Force. In 1957 he became president of the Georgian Group of Edinburgh, who later became the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland. He lived with his family in Tyninghame House and designed a number of landscape gardens in the environment.

He was since 1923 with Sarah Cook, daughter of George William Cook, married. The couple had two children:

Public offices

From 1922 to 1958 Baillie - Hamilton sat as a Scottish Representative Peer (representatives of the Scottish nobles ) in the House of Lords. The Earl was 1929-1946 Deputy Lieutenant (DL ) of East Lothian, 1946-1952 Vice - Lord- Lieutenant of East Lothian and 1952-1970 Lord Lieutenant of East Lothian and Berwickshire. He served as justice of the peace in East Lothian and Berwickshire. In the Order of the Thistle in 1952 he recorded and received in 1957 an honorary doctorate (Doctor of Law, LL. D. ) of the Glasgow University.
