George Barnard (zoologist)

George Barnard ( born March 30, 1831 in Chislehurst, London, † March 11 1894 in Launceston, Tasmania ) was a British ornithologist and entomologist.

Life

George Barnard had a big collection of insects with emphasis on butterflies and beetles and a large collection of bird eggs. In 1891, he built on his property in Coomooboolaroo a museum for its collections. After his death, the collection of insects from the Walter Rothschild Zoological Museum in Tring was purchased. Albert Stewart Meek, who was friends with Barnard had, Lord Rothschild made ​​aware of this collection.

Barnard wrote numerous ornithological contributions for Alfred John North's Catalogue of the Nests and Eggs of Birds Found Breeding in Australia and Tasmania ( 1889). His first wife, Mary Barnard, provided drawings of birds. The couple had seven children, including Charles Ashmall Barnard (1867-1942), founding member and later president of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union.
