George Bradshaw

George Bradshaw ( born July 29, 1801 in Pendleton, † September 6th 1853 in Christiania ) was an English cartographer and publisher. He gained particular notoriety for its widespread Course books.

Life

He was born in Windsor Bridge, Pendleton, now part of the City of Salford. His parents Thomas and Mary, nee Rogers could teach according to the teachings of theologians Swedberg her only son.

After an apprenticeship as an engraver in Manchester in 1820, he moved with his parents to Belfast and opened his own workshop there. Two years later, he returned to Manchester to continue his business there and to specialize particularly on the sting and print maps from 1827. His cards were known as " Bradshaw 's Maps of Inland Navigation".

He became a member of the Quakers and helped with other reformers here with hold in Manchester peace conferences, as well as to build schools and soup kitchens.

He married on May 16, 1839 his wife Martha, nee Darbyshire of Stretton in the south of Warrington. In the same year, he published his first course book Bradshaw 's Railway Time Tables for the newly created rail for six pence. Already in 1840, got his book the new name Bradshaw 's Railway Companion and has been extended to several section cards. The price doubled to a shilling. The course book was reissued only irregular, but it appeared monthly updates to the schedules. On the advice of his London business partner William Jones Adams he gave in 1841, in addition to the monthly Bradshaw 's Monthly Railway Guide at the old price of sixpence out, who achieved worldwide fame, not least because of its striking yellow envelope. Some railway companies fought his course books initially as a troublesome competition. He met by shopped there and the conflict in the shareholders' meeting raised the issue.

On a trip to Norway, he fell ill with a friend near Christiania of Asian cholera and died within a few hours. In addition to his wife he left behind still their son, Christopher.
