George Entwistle

George Entwistle ( born July 8, 1962) is a British media manager. From September to November 2012, he was Director General of the BBC.

Life

Entwistle grew up in Yorkshire and attended the Silcoates School in Wakefield. He studied philosophy and politics at the University of Durham. As a journalist, he joined Haymarket Magazines and went in 1989 as a trainee for British broadcaster BBC.

On September 17, 2012 Entwistle was appointed to succeed Mark Thompson as Director General of the BBC. In the context of two scandals, he performed on November 10 back from this post.

The two scandals:

  • In September 2012, the television channel ITV on child abuse allegations against Jimmy Savile, who died in October 2011 a BBC Star reported. Following it came to contradictory statements by the BBC about the reasons for which similar research by the BBC's Newsnight in December 2011 and canceled a planned show was not broadcast at that time. Entwistle had already at this time a senior position at the BBC.
  • On 2 November 2012, the BBC was accused in a report in the news report Newsnight falsely a former politician of the Conservative Party ( " Tories " ) of child abuse.

Entwistle was given a " golden handshake " in the amount of one annual salary, including 450,000 pounds. This criticized, among others, a spokesman for the Prime Minister and the Minister of Culture.

Transition was chief Tim Davie. On November 22, 2012 Tony Hall, was appointed from 2001 to 2012 director of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, the new Director General of the BBC.
