George Hawi

George Hawi (not Haoui, Arabic جورج حاوي Dschūrdsch Haui, born November 5, 1938 in Bteghrine; † 21 June 2005 in Beirut, Lebanon) was a Lebanese politician and 1979-1990 head of the Lebanese Communist Party ( LCP ).

Hawi was born into a Greek Orthodox Christian family. His Communist Party was set anti-Syrian since 1976, when Syria with his invasion ( eg with the Druze PSP and the LKP PLO) against right-wing Christian militias ( Phalange, FL ) prevented the possible victory of a " Left Front ".

1987 escalated the fighting again, when the then barely 700 -strong Communist Party militia with Hawis agreement in full or deliberate self-esteem allied with Syria Shiite Amal militia (then up to 20,000 men ) attacked and only by the timely intervention of the PSP militia was saved from destruction. However, before the PSP could drive the Amal from West Beirut, Syrian troops intervened again and occupied against the vigorous protest of the then President Amin Gemayel positions in the capital, who traced the warring militias to their starting positions.

Hawi came in 2005 in a bomb attack on his car in Beirut's Wata Musaitbi killed.
