George Henry Kinahan

George Henry Kinahan ( born December 19, 1829 in Dublin, † December 5, 1908 in Clontarf in Dublin) was an Irish geologist.

Life and work

George Henry Kinahan was the third son of the 15 children of the Barristers Daniel Kinahan ( 1797-1859 ) and his wife Louisa Anne Stuart (nee Millar ). He began training at Trinity College in Dublin and received a degree in civil engineering in 1853. Then Kinahan was briefly employed in the construction of the railway viaduct over the Boyne in Drogheda, before the guided by Joseph beds Jukes Geological Survey of Ireland joined on 21 August 1854.

On November 12, 1855, he married Harriette Anne Gerrard ( † 1892), with whom he had several children. Kinahan was promoted to "Senior Geologist" and on March 1, 1869 " District Surveyor " on 23 March 1861. On 31 August 1890 he was forced to retire.

Kinahan was co-author of 26 Memoirs of the Geological Survey of Ireland. He also wrote numerous articles for the Journal of the Geological Society of Dublin. For the journals of the Kilkenny and South- East of Ireland Archaeological Society and the Royal Historical and Archaeological Association of Ireland Kinahan has written articles on Crannogs. Often he also wrote Beiträgte for The Irish Naturalist and the Geological Magazine. His most lasting release was the Economic Geology of Ireland, which was based on 1886-1888 lectures held before the Royal Geological Society of Ireland.

George Henry Kinahan was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Ireland in Avoca ( County Wicklow ). One of his older brothers was John Robert Kinahan (1828-1863), who taught natural history at the Museum of Irish Industry.
