George Hugh Niederauer

George Hugh Niederauer ( born June 14, 1936 in Los Angeles ) is an emeritus Archbishop of San Francisco.

Life

George Niederauer was born as the only child of George and Elaine Niederauer. He attended St. Catherine 's Military Academy in Anaheim from 1946 to 1950. 1954, he graduated from St. Anthony's High School in Long Beach. At St. John Seminar 1959 he obtained his bachelor's degree in philosophy and at the Catholic University of America in Washington DC 1962 bachelor's degree in theology. In addition, the Master's degree in English Literature at Loyola University in Los Angeles and in 1966 a doctorate in literature at the University of Southern California awarded him in 1962.

On April 30, 1962 he was ordained priest. From 1963 to 1965 he worked in the parish of Holy Name of Jesus in Los Angeles.

From 1972 to 1992, Niederauer Spiritual Director of the St. John's Seminary, 1987-1992 Rector of St. John's Seminar. In addition, he taught English literature at St. John's Seminar.

On November 3, 1994 Niederauer was appointed by John Paul II as Bishop of Salt Lake City, Utah. The episcopal ordination took place on 25 January 1995.

On 15 December 2005 he was appointed by Benedict XVI. appointed Archbishop of San Francisco and thus the successor to Cardinal William Levada. The official launch took place on 15 February 2006.
