George Macartney (British consul)

Sir George Macartney ( * January 19, 1867, † May 19, 1945 ) was the end of the 19th and early 20th century, the British Consul-General in Kashgar as well as a collector of antiques.

In Kashgar supported he and his wife, Lady Catherine Macartney, passing travelers, archaeologists in search of Buddhist treasures of the Silk Road. Among her guests were Albert von Le Coq and Aurel Stein. Lady Macartney wrote a book about her time in Kashgar, entitled " An English Lady in Chinese Turkestan ".

Macartney was a member of the Order of the Indian Empire ( Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire, KCIE ).

His successor was Clarmont Skrine, who wrote a book about Macartney's diplomatic career in Kashgar along with Pamela Nightingale.
