George Papp

George Edward Papp (* January 20, 1916; † August 8, 1989 in Oradell, New Jersey) was an American comic book artist and cartoonist. Papp became famous as the longtime artist of the comic book series Superboy, as well as co-creators of the series Green Arrow (1941 ), Congo Bill (1941 ) and Tales of the Bizarro World ( 1958).

Life

Papp began in the 1930s to work as a cartoonist. In 1941, he created with the authors Mort Weisinger and Whitney Ellsworth his most effective figures: the master archer Green Arrow and the jungle adventurer Congo Bill, whose adventures are published today in varying forms. During the Second World War Papp joined the U.S. Army.

On his return he took up his old profession again. His most successful work in the 1950s and 1960s was the series Superboy, which he supervised as a draftsman from 1958 to 1967. During this time, together with the science fiction authors Otto Binder Papp created the character of the distorted mirror image of Bizarro Superman, which eventually became the title character who also designed by Papp series Tales of the Bizarro World. Papp in 1968 was dismissed by his employer DC, as he had the demand for old-age and health of the publishing staff connected. He then worked as a freelance artist.
