George Robert Gray

George Robert Gray ( born July 8, 1808 in Chelsea, † May 6, 1872 in London) was a British zoologist, which focused in the study of birds. He was the son of the zoologist Samuel Frederick Gray and brother of John Edward Gray.

Life and work

George Robert Gray was educated at the Merchant Taylor 's School and then concentrated his studies privately on entomology and ornithology. In 1831 he became an assistant at the Zoological Department of the British Museum in London. In 1842 he became a member of the Commission " Nomenclator Zoologicus ", together with Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz and Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte. 1866 Gray was inducted into the Royal Society; In 1872 he died in London.
