George Rodger

George Rodger (born 19 March 1908 in Hale, Cheshire, † July 24, 1995 in Ashford, Kent, England ) was an English photographer.

Life

He rode from 1926 to 1929 as a sailor at sea and taught himself photography in itself. Between 1936 and 1938 he worked for the BBC and for the Agency "Black Star". From 1939 to 1945 he was for life as a war correspondent in many countries on the way, including in West Africa, the Sahara, India and Italy.

On April 15, 1945, he entered one of the first photographers to the Bergen -Belsen, which became for him a traumatic experience. Then he decided not to work as a war photographer. He made a 45,000 km long journey through Africa, searching for the originality of life. 1948 to 1950 he lived for a time in the Nuba Mountains in the Nuba and documented their way of life.

In 1947 he founded, together with Robert Capa, Henri Cartier -Bresson and David Seymour, the photo agency Magnum Photos.

1959 was Rodger in England down and took from there many more trips to Africa, among which are also on behalf of the Standard Oil Company and Esso. He reports for National Geographic, Life, London Illustrated and the star.
