George Spencer, 4th Duke of Marlborough

George Spencer, 4th Duke of Marlborough, KG, PC, FRS ( January 26, 1739 *, † January 29, 1817 in Blenheim Palace at Woodstock ) was a British nobleman and politician.

Life

Spencer was born as the son of Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough. Spencer attended Eton College and played in 1755 in the Coldstream Guards. 1756 he was appointed on foot at the 20th Infantry Regiment to captain.

After he had previously led the courtesy title Marquess of Blandford, in 1758, he followed his father in the title of the Duke of Marlborough claimed. In 1760 he took over his father's seat in the House of Lords, in the following year he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire. In 1762 he was appointed Lord Chamberlain of the Household of King George III. appointed, to whom he handed the royal scepter also at the coronation in Westminster Abbey. It was followed by the Privy Counsellors Would a (1761 ), the Lord Privy Seal ( 1763-1765 ), the inclusion in the Order of the Garter ( 1768) and the Royal Society (1786 ).

Marriage and issue

Spencer married in 1762 Lady Caroline Russell, daughter of John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford. From the marriage seven children were born.
