George Spencer-Churchill, 6th Duke of Marlborough

George Spencer-Churchill, 6th Duke of Marlborough (* December 27, 1793 in Hurst, Berkshire, † July 1, 1857 in Blenheim Palace, Woodstock ) was a British nobleman and politician.

Life

Spencer-Churchill in 1793 as the son of George Spencer-Churchill, 5th Duke of Marlborough and his wife Lady Susan Stewart was born in the county of Berkshire in the estate Bill Hill in Hurst.

From 1805 to 1811 attended Spencer-Churchill Eton College by then his education at Christ Church College, Oxford University to complete. From 1818, when he finished his studies until 1840, when he succeeded after his father's death this as Duke of Marlborough and was promoted to the British House of Lords, sat Spencer-Churchill intermittently as MP for the constituency Chippenham ( 1818-1820 ) and Woodstock (1826-1835 and 1838-1840) for the Conservative Party in the House of Commons.

In addition to his function as a member of the House of Lords from 1840 until his death in 1857 Spencer-Churchill held office from 1842 to 1857 as Lord Lieutenant for the county of Oxfordshire.

Family

Spencer-Churchill was married three times. In his first marriage since 1819 with Lady Jane Stewart, a daughter of George Stewart, 8th Earl of Galloway. From this marriage four children were born:

  • Lady Louisa Spencer-Churchill (1820-1882)
  • John Winston Spencer - Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough ( 1822-1883 )
  • Lord Alfred Spencer-Churchill (1824-1893)
  • Lord Alan Spencer-Churchill (1825-1873)

From Spencer - Churchill's second wife, Charlotte Augusta Flower, a daughter of Henry Flower, 4th Viscount Ashbrook, which was closed in 1846, two children were born.

  • Lord Almeric Athelstan Spencer-Churchill (1847-1856)
  • Lady Clementina Augusta Spencer-Churchill (1847-1886)

With his third wife Jane Francis Clinton Stewart, whom he married in 1851, went forth a son:

  • Lord Edward Spencer-Churchill (1853-1911)
