George Stanich

George Stanich ( George Anthony Stanich; * November 4, 1928 ) is a retired American high jumper.

In 1948 he finished seventh at the NCAA Championships and sixth at the U.S. Championships. In the qualifying heats for the Olympic Games in London in 1948, he managed to qualify with a huge increase to 2.04 m second behind Vern McGrew. While McGrew in London left early, mastered Stanich as well as five other athletes the height of 1.95 m. Only the Australian John Winter jumped over 1.98 m, and so came Stanich due to the number of failed attempts on the bronze medal behind Norwegian Bjørn Paulson.

While studying at the University of California, Los Angeles, he distinguished himself also in basketball. In 1950, he decided on a career as a professional baseball player with the Oakland Oaks and the Idaho Falls Russets.
