George Stephen Morrison

George Stephen Morrison ( born January 7, 1919 in Rome, Georgia, USA, † November 17, 2008 in Coronado, California, United States) was an American naval officer.

Morrison joined the United States Naval Academy in the year 1938. He graduated from the Academy in 1941 and was sent successfully with the rank of ensign to Hawaii. In 1943, the trained as a pilot in Pensacola (Florida), from which he graduated in the spring of 1944. Morrison flew in World War II during the Pacific War combat missions for the U.S. Navy.

In 1963 he took over command of the aircraft carrier Bon Homme Richard. Morrison had promoted the command of the fleet during Tonkin incident in 1964. In 1967 he was appointed admiral. After the fall of Saigon in 1972, he was appointed Commander of Naval Forces in the Marianas and headed among others, the relief efforts for Vietnamese refugees until just before his retirement in 1975.

On July 3, 1971 Morrison was the keynote speaker at the decommissioning of his former ship the USS Bon Homme Richard, in Washington DC On this day also died his son, Jim Morrison, the lead singer of the rock group The Doors. Morrison had another son and a daughter; his wife Clara died in 2005.
