George Stepney

George Stepney (* 1663 in Westminster, † September 15, 1707 in Chelsea, London ) was an English diplomat and poet.

The son of George Stepney attended Westminster School from 1676 and 1682 from Trinity College, Cambridge, where he taught from 1687.

With the help of his friend Charles Montagu, he entered the diplomatic service and in 1692 ambassador in Brandenburg. He stood with his friend Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in correspondence. In 1702 he was sent to Vienna. After Prince Eugene of Savoy in 1705 had called for his resignation, he went in 1706, to The Hague, where he falls ill in the following year returned to London.

In November 1697 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 1693 he translated the eighth satire of Juvenal.
