George Tibbits

George Tibbits ( born January 14, 1763 in Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Iceland, † July 19, 1849 in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York) was an American politician and member of the U.S. House of Representatives for New York.

Career

Tibbits was classical studies and was by 1784 in Lansingburgh (New York) worked as a dealer. Then he moved in 1797 to Troy (New York), where he continued his activities as a businessman. He decided on a career in politics, was elected in 1800 in the New York State Assembly.

Tibbits was elected as a Federalist to the 8th U.S. Congress, where he served from March 4, 1803 to March 3, 1805. He introduced in 1804 not to re-election. Later, he was from 1815 to 1818 in the Senate from New York. During this time, he ran unsuccessfully in 1816 for the office of lieutenant governor (English Lieutenanant governor) of New York.

He was a member of the Commission on State Prisons, which in 1824 created a favorable report on the Auburn prison. Then he was a member of the Commission, which was entrusted with the construction of Sing Sing prison. Later, he was from 1830 to 1836 mayor of Troy. He died in 1849 in Troy and was subsequently buried there on the Oakwood Cemetery.
