George van Egmond

Life

He came from the family of Egmond. His father was Johann III. of Egmond.

He entered holy orders and became in 1526 a canon of St. Lambert in Liege. In 1534 he was dean of the cathedral chapter of Liege. He remained in this position until 1543. Charles V appointed him abbot of the abbey in 1526 and Saint- Amand at Tournai.

In 1534 he became bishop of Utrecht, at the instigation of the emperor. The Papal confirmation was made in 1535. Had not Notable own political power, since the diocese of Utrecht was passed in 1528 in the Dutch sphere of Charles V. He was pious and attempted to church reforms. He also promoted the arts and sciences. So the poet Janus Secundus was his secretary. Gerard Morinck honored him with a script.

After his death he was buried in Abbey of Saint -Amand. In the cathedral of Utrecht is located in his memory a cenotaph.
