George W. Hayward

George Jonas Whitaker Hayward ( * June 9, 1839, † in August 1870 in Yasin at Kashgar, China ) was a British explorer.

George W. Hayward led on behalf of the London Royal Geographical Society 1868-69 a journey from India through the Himalayas to East Turkistan from certain while the situation of Kashgar and Yarkand through astronomical observations and provided valuable news about flooring design, nature and people of that empire home. His report " Journey from Leh ( Ladakh ) to Yarkand and Kashgar " appeared in the Journal of that Society, Vol 40 (1870 ). That same year ( 1869) he tried to penetrate to the sources of the Amu Darya to the Pamir mountain region, but was murdered in August 1870 in Yasin at Kashgar by the natives. Henry Newbolt published a poem on his death (He fell among the thieves, 1897).
