George Walter

Sir George Herbert Walter ( * 1928, † March 4, 2008 in Saint John's, Antigua ) was a West Indian politician. From 1971 to 1976 he served as Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda. In this position, he fought for the complete independence of the island nation of Great Britain.

George Walter was born in 1928, various sources give 1930 as year of birth, however.

As Chairman of the Progressive Labor Movement (PLM ) won the elections in 1971 against Walter Vere Bird Sr. only four years previously the former colony had been declared a dependency with autonomous status. During his tenure, especially economic difficulties were next to his demands for full self-government to the British occupiers formative. As a result, Walter lost the next election against Bird.

After leaving office in 1976 Walter not held the premiership again. 1981 Antigua and Barbuda became independent. Walter later became leader of the Antigua Workers' Union; In 2000 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II to the peerage.

Sir George Walter, after already a highway was named in his lifetime, died in March 2008, 79 -year-old in the capital of Antigua from heart failure. He was widowed.
