George White (British Army officer)

Sir George Stuart White VC, GCB, OM, GCSI, GCMG, GCIE, GCVO (* July 4, 1835, † June 24, 1912 ) was a British Field Marshal, Commander in Chief in India, Governor of Gibraltar and commander of the garrison of Ladysmith in the Boer War.

Life

White joined after completion of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. With this regiment he fought in the Sepoy Mutiny in India. 1878 to 1880 he fought as a major and deputy regimental commander of the 92nd Regiment of Foot ( Gordon Highlanders ) during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. In this campaign he led on September 1, 1880 the final attack on Kandahar. For this and for his efforts in the battle of Charasiah he was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest award of the United Kingdom for outstanding bravery in the face of the enemy. In January 1881 he became commander of the Gordon Highlanders, and took this part in the operation in Sudan to rescue Gordon Pasha, and to the relief of Khartoum during the Mahdi uprising under Garnet Wolseley.

From 1885 to 1887, he fought in Burma and was beaten for it in 1886 knighted. After the return of Frederick Roberts in 1887 to India White took over from this, as a Major General, the chief command in Burma.

In 1890, he led the Zhob Field Force. She had to make sure the order the rebels to Dost Muhammed, in the north -west border region. White marched into the valley on October 1. Since he did not find the missing culprit, there were no clashes. After the outbreak of the Boer War he took command in Natal and commanded the garrison of Ladysmith in the 118tägigen siege of the city. From 1900 to 1904 he was Governor of Gibraltar. In 1903 he was personally by King Edward VII, when he visited Gibraltar, appointed Field Marshal.

In Broughshane, the Irish village, from which the Whites, today is a monument to George Stuart White.
