Georges Balandier

Georges Balandier ( born December 21, 1920 in Aillevillers -et- Lyaumont, Haute- Saone, Franche Comté ) is a French sociologist, ethnologist and anthropologist.

Life

After studying philosophy and the Second World War Balandier worked for the French government and traveled in this capacity often in the colonies. Shaken by the social misery that he found there, he turned to ethnology. In 1955 he published his first research on African societies. Together with Alfred Sauvy he developed in 1956 the concept of the Third World (according to the " third estate " of the French Revolution).

Balandier is now emeritus professor of the Sorbonne and Research Director of the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales ( EHESS ).
