Georges de la Tour

Georges de La Tour (* 1593 in Vic- sur- seille, Lorraine; † January 30, 1652 in Luneville ) was a Baroque painter of Lorraine, which is attributed to the French Baroque painters in the literature.

Life

La Tour was the son of a master baker, the second of seven children. About his youth and apprenticeship nothing is known; it is not known how he came to painting. In 1618, he married Diane Le Nerf, the daughter of a financial manager of the Duke of Lorraine.

In a document of 1639, he is as the official painter of Louis XIII. ( " Peintre ordinaire du Roy " ) mentioned. Already in 1644 he was described as " peintre fameux ". His artistic motives were both religious as well as secular nature: His nocturnes are consistently kept dark and lit only by candles. Due to the preference for high-contrast chiaroscuro painting you count him to the group of " Caravaggio ". He gained particular notoriety through scenes from the picaresque life Tags malice that include racketeering, such as the wrong games with cards (see The False player with the ace of diamonds ) and fraudulent fortune-telling (see The Fortune Teller ). There are over the painter only a single document: 1646 citizens of the town Luneville complained to the Duke about La Tour, because he " is the people hated going through the large number of dogs that he considers himself as if he were the lord of the place "and" driving the rabbits into the grain, it spoils and trampled. " Because fights he has been displayed several times. One of his sons was raised to the peerage in 1670. It is not clear why this is not used his influence to put his father a memory. There is no figure of the painter, perhaps he has portrayed in the figure of the cheater in the painting The False player with the ace of spades.

Since the 1920s it has devoted La Tour's works again increased attention.
