Georges Martin (freemason)

Georges Martin ( born May 9, 1844 in Paris, † October 1, 1916 ibid ) was a French physician and politician ( Senator and General Council ) and one of the founders of the mixed Freemasonry for men and women.

Professional and political career

George Martin was the son of a pharmacist. After training with the Jesuits in 1861 he received the philological Baccalaureate ( Baccalauréat es- lettres ) and 1863 scientific Baccalaureate ( Baccalauréat es- sciences ), both high school appropriate qualifications. He took a medical degree and worked increasingly as a political actor to the ideas of the Republic and of equal rights. During this time, he met in Italy in 1866 Giuseppe Garibaldi.

After his return to France he continued his medical studies in Montpellier and then in Paris, where he received in 1870 the title of Doctor of Medicine ( docteur en médecine ). Then he practiced his profession for ten years as a " doctor of the poor" from: The " man of action " he had, following his liberal and republican beliefs, founded in 1866, a health service.

In 1874, Martin was first elected to the city council of Paris; three times was his re-election. He was a member of the Supervisory Board of Public Assistance ( Assistance Publique ) and contributed there to the realization of reforms. - In 1884 he was elected President of the General Council ( Conseil général) chosen the Seine, in 1885 then a senator of the same department.

After a defeat in the 1890s, Martin moved from Paris back to his property in the Canton of Lamotte- Beuvron in the department of Loir -et- Cher. In 1897 he was elected to the General Council that department, where he served for regular re-election until his death.

Masonic career

Georges Martin was admitted to the Union Lodge of the Grande Loge et Bienfaisance de France on March 21, 1879. He was co-founder of the Grande Loge de France Symbolique Ecossaise. From 1880 on, he worked unsuccessfully for the inclusion of women in this male Masonic obedience.

On 14 January 1882 he assisted in the recording of Maria Deraismes in the Lodge Les Libres Penseurs in Le Pecq, which thus became the first Freemason. After this lodge had seceded from the Grande Loge de France Symbolique Ecossaise, he founded in 1893 together with Maria Deraismes from her the first mixed box, the Grande Loge Symbolique Écossaise " Le Droit Humain ". She presented as a Mother Lodge is the basis for the Le Droit Humain obedience, its worldwide development Martin devoted himself to the last. In 1901 he co-founded the Supreme Council of the International Masonic Order of men and women ( Ordre Mixte International Maçonique " Le Droit Humain " ), subject to the lodges all this obedience.
