Georgios Kountouriotis

Georgios Kountouriotis (Greek: Γεωργιος Κουντουριώτης ) (* 1782 on the island of Hydra, † 1858) was a Greek politician and former Prime Minister.

Family

Kountouriotis came from a family of arvanitischen the island of Hydra. He was brother of the independence fighter Lazaros Kountouriotis. His grandson Pavlos Kountouriotis was Admiral and President of the Hellenic Republic.

Political career

Independence struggle

After the beginning of the struggle for independence in 1821, he supported with his family with generous donations and ships these efforts. During this time he was often at odds with other sea captains. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the revolution. December 31, 1823 to April 26, 1826, he was president of the executive and de facto prime minister during the siege of Missolonghi.

Advance to the Prime Minister

After independence, he was a member of the Cabinet of the first governor Ioannis Kapodistrias. After the assassination of Kapodistrias, he was elected President of the Senate. From 22 April to 18 August 1832, he also served as President of the Gouvernementkommission.

Kountouriotis occurred because of his dislike of the Russian Party ( Ρωσικό Κóμμα ) unlike most politicians of Hydra not the English party ( Αγγλικό Κóμμα ), but the French party ( Γαλλικό Κόμμα ) at.

Dated March 13, 1836 him King Ludwig I of Bavaria awarded the Commander's Cross of Merit of the Bavarian Crown.

From 19 March to 17 October 1848 he was Prime Minister for a short time.

His property on Hydra was purchased by the Ministry of Culture in 1991 and converted into a museum showing an exhibition on the recent history of Hydra among others.
