Georgios Papanikolaou

George Nicolas Papanicolaou or Georgios Nikolaou Papanikolaou (Greek Γεώργιος Νικολάου Παπανικολάου; born May 13, 1883 in Kymi, Euboea, Greece, † February 19, 1962 in New Jersey, United States) was a Greek physician and pathologist.

Papanicolaou attended the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, where he received his medical degree in 1904. In 1910 he received his PhD at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich.

Its most important development was the so-called Papanicolaou smear (short: Pap smear), with an early cytological diagnosis of cervical cancer in screening was possible. The Papanicolaou smear was developed at Cornell University in New York. This investigation is carried out today routinely gynecologists. This simple and inexpensive method and can let the incidence of cervical cancer, significantly reduce mainly by recognizing the early, non- invasive and yet easily removable surgically preforms. Furthermore, as the radical nature of the necessary operation has been reduced.

Papanikolaou received the Albert Lasker Award in 1950 for Clinical Medical Research.
