Georgios Zoitakis

Georgios Zoitakis (Greek Γεώργιος Ζωιτάκης; born March 3, 1910 in Nafpaktos, † 21 October 1996 in Athens ) was a Greek general who on 13 December 1967 to March 21, 1972 Regent ( viceroy ) of Greece was.

Zoitakis completed as part of his military career, the " Scholi Evelpidon ", the Greek officer academy in Athens. During his military career, he commanded the first and third Army Corps of the Greek Army. On April 21, 1967, the " colonels " under Georgios Papadopoulos, Stylianos Pattakos and Nikolaos Makarezos a military coup. Zoitakis was appointed a day after the coup in the dictatorial government of Konstantinos Kollias to the Deputy Secretary of Defense; Defence Minister was Grigorios Spantidakis. In this role Zoitakis remained until December 13, 1967, when the counter- coup failed by King Constantine II and the king went into the Italian exile. Zoitakis officiated on 13 December 1967 to 21 March 1972 as regent for the king in exile. He was followed by Georgios Papadopoulos then as regent. On 1 June 1973 Papadopoulos proclaimed the republic. After the failure of the programs proposed by the Junta unification with the Republic of Cyprus and the local invasion of Turkish troops in 1974 came the collapse of the military dictatorship and a return to democracy, Zoitakis was convicted in 1974 for treason to life imprisonment.
