Georgioupolis (Greek Γεωργιούπολη ( f sg ), high linguistically Georgioupolis, Γεωργιούπολις ) is a village in the central north coast of Crete in Chania regional district, about 22 km from Rethymno, 35 km from Chania and 100 km from Heraklion away. The village of Georgioupolis had 2011 936 inhabitants, the village itself 455

By 2010, Georgioupolis was also an independent municipality with about 2500 inhabitants. Collected enlarged in 1997 by incorporations and municipality ( dimos ), it was January 1, 2011 one of six municipal districts of the newly created municipality Apokoronas.

Georgioupolis was founded in 1893 as Almiropolis and renamed in 1899 in honor of the then High Commissioner of Crete George of Greece, Georgioupolis. To drain the original moorland, early 20th century were planted many eucalyptus trees. An impressive avenue of eucalyptus trees, therefore, today welcomes visitors and overlooks the village.

The village lies in the curve of a bay in front of a western peninsula projecting into a tree with eucalyptus trees river valley. The beach of Georgioupolis consists mostly of fine sand, extending over 10 km to the east. About five kilometers inland is the only natural freshwater lake in Crete, the Hassan- lake.

You can reach Georgioupolis out quickly, the two major cities of Chania and Rethymno. Also Vamos and Kalives are not far from the small town.

The place has a small fishing port, about a kilometer short of the river Almiros ( dt, the Salty ') is fed. In the water of the river, among other turtles are native. Georgioupolis is strongly influenced by the mass tourism. Both in the local area as well as east of it created numerous hotel facilities as well as a dependent on tourism infrastructure with shops, catering establishments, real estate agencies and car rental companies.
