Georgius Jacobus Johannes van Os

George Jacobus Johannes van Os ( * November 20, 1782 in The Hague, † July 11, 1861 in Paris) was a Dutch painter of flowers. He also devoted himself to landscape and porcelain painting.

Life and work

George Jacobus Johannes van Os, son of Jan van Huysum imitative floral and marine painter Jan van Os (1744-1808) and brother of the animal painter Pieter Gerardus van Os (1776-839), born on November 20, 1782 in The Hague, formed at his own hand, and drew most of the plants and flowers to the flora batava by Jan Kops. In 1809 he won the Award of the Society Felix meritis in Amsterdam, settled there and started only now to paint in oil. Soon we saw almost every art exhibition flower and fruit pieces by him that like his father did recognize him as a worthy emulator Jan van Huysum. In 1812 he went to Paris. There he decorated vessels of the porcelain manufactory at Sèvres with flowers and fruits and in addition also painted birds and game birds. In 1817 he was employed at Sèvres. The French called it the Rubens painting of flowers. Os has been tried with success in landscape painting, he died on July 11, 1861 in Paris.
