Gérard Genette

Gérard Genette ( born 1930 in Paris ) is a French literary scholar, who since the second half of the 20th century has a major influence on the development of narrative theory.

Life

After graduating from the École Normale Supérieure Genette was appointed first as an assistant and in 1967 as a professor of French literature at the Sorbonne. In 1970 he was involved in the founding of the journal Poétique.

Genette was mainly concerned with issues of textual analysis on the basis of structuralism. He has published influential contributions, such as the role of the author and of intertextuality and paratexts (also in conflict with the work of Julia Kristeva ), which he conceives as a subcategory of " Transtextualität " (see his work palimpsests. The literature on second stage).

In Genette among other things, the new coinage of the term diegesis goes back, together with the resulting developed criteria for determining focus ( see focalization ) or narrator position of a narrative text ( see narratology ) or the distinction of " discours " and " History". The latter terms refer to the appointment of the form and content of a text which delimit the what and the how of each other ( in English usage mostly with "story vs. Discourse "). In the circle of the Russian formalists these were " fabula vs. sujet " named Genette completed the model by an additional aspect: " histoire "," récit "and" narration ".

In the German literature, the model is still referred to as Genette's new model. The reason for this is the German translation of the work, which is dated to 1994, although Genette in 1974 published his theoretical considerations in French.
