Gerd Theissen

Gerd Theissen ( born April 24, 1943 in Reydt, today part of Mönchengladbach ) is Emeritus Professor of New Testament at the Faculty of Protestant Theology of the University of Heidelberg.

Life

Theißen studied Protestant theology and German. He was charged with investigations of the Hebrews 1968 Philipp Vielhauer to Dr. theol. PhD in New Testament. He then took the place of the study inspector at the Evangelical Theological Stift at the University of Bonn. His habilitation was made in 1972 in the same compartment with a form-critical work on early Christian miracle stories. In Bonn, he was a teacher at the high school for the subjects German and religion as well as a lecturer. In 1978 he was appointed professor at the University of Copenhagen, where he among other things, to dealt with the Scandinavian Psychology of Religion of the Uppsala School. From 1980 to 2008 he was a professor at the University of Heidelberg. He received international attention; most of his books have been translated into English. In 2002 he was awarded by the British Academy, the Burkitt Medal for Biblical Studies.

His focus is on the areas of the social history of early Christianity, the historical Jesus, and in a methodically disciplined psychological exegesis. He was one of the first who studied the New Testament with sociological methods. In addition, he has published several volumes of sermons, a Homiletics and Bible teaching. He is Associate Editor of Protestant theology.

From 2007 to September 2009 were Theissen was secretary of the Philosophical class of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences.

Theissen is married to psychotherapist Dr. Christa Theissen.
