Gerhard Fischer (Diplomat)

Gerhard Fischer ( born September 20, 1921 in Oslo, † July 3, 2006 in Copenhagen ) was a German diplomat and ambassador.

Fischer was born the son of a diplomat. He grew up since the age of five on in China. After graduating from high school in Shanghai in 1940, he returned to military service back to Germany. After the end of World War II, he studied law and Sinology. In 1952 he entered the diplomatic service one with stops in Addis Ababa, Hong Kong, Madras, Kuala Lumpur and as " Asia - agent" in the Foreign Office; later in Dublin and The Hague. Shortly before his retirement, he resigned as German ambassador in Bern its service.

Fischer moved to South India and worked for five years in the leper colony in Chettipatty. Then he built, which was established by him Gerhard Fischer Foundation in the foothills of the Himalayas own hospitals, workshops, schools, wells and latrines. Fischer lived between 1980 and 2000, six months a year, even in his projects.

In 1997, the Gandhi Peace Prize he was awarded. The associated prize money of around half a million DM he used for his humanitarian projects.
