Gerhard Taschner

Gerhard Taschner ( born May 25, 1922 in Jägerndorf; † July 21, 1976 in Berlin) was a German violin virtuoso.

Life

Taschner debuted as Seven Years in Prague with a violin concerto by Mozart. Later he studied with Jeno Hubay in Budapest, Bronislaw Huberman and Adolf at Bak in Vienna. In 1939 he was concertmaster at the Municipal Theatre of Brno. 1941, at age 19, brought by Wilhelm Furtwängler as the youngest first concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic, he established himself in the war years as a celebrated soloist quickly. After the Second World War he formed with cellist Ludwig Hoelscher and pianist Walter Gieseking a successful trio. In 1950 he was appointed professor at the Berlin Academy of Music. Until the early 60s, he appeared in concerts throughout the world, then had Taschner due to a back injury end his career. Thereafter he devoted himself exclusively to his teaching activities. From 1942 he was married to the pianist Gerda Nette- Taschner (* November 21, 1906 † October 15, 2012 ). Gerhard Taschner suffered towards the end of his life, from mental health problems for which he found no solution. He gave himself the alcohol down and died of liver cirrhosis.

He received an honorary grave in the III. Municipal cemetery Stubenrauchstraße in Berlin- Friedenau.

Meanwhile, re-released recordings (from 1997 on EMI and on MDG, for the most part derived from broadcasting archives, the relatively few studio recordings at Archiphon ) testify to the superior rank of violinist whose career strangely fizzled and for decades was completely fallen into oblivion. Among the highlights of his discography Kreutzer Sonata heard with pianist Walter Gieseking that arose spontaneously in a break for orchestra recordings.

From 2001 to 2005 awarded by the University of the Arts Berlin the Gerhard Taschner Prize for violin.
