Gerhard Wahrig

Gerhard Wahrig ( born May 10, 1923 in Burgstädt, Saxony, † September 2, 1978 in Wiesbaden ) was a German linguist and lexicographer.

Gerhard Wahrig worked on semantics, grammar and lexicography.

His major work is titled German Dictionary and is also called The Wahrig or The Great Wahrig. This 1966 first published work represents the first attempt at a significance dictionary of the German language and has made ​​a name especially among German students at home and abroad. Since the year 1986, founded by Gerhard Wahrig dictionaries are revised under the direction of Renate Wahrig - Burfeind and updated.

Publishing program

In addition to the first edition of the German dictionary especially the 8th edition from the year 2006 to call for the 40th anniversary of the German dictionary, which contains the binding upon August 1, 2006 overrides the official spelling rules in the course of spelling reform.
