Germà Colon

Germà Colón i Domènech ( born November 30, 1928 in Castellon de la Plana ) is a Spanish philologist and linguist. His main area is the Catalan lexicology. He was from 1967 to 1997 professor at the University of Basel.

Biography

Colon studied Romance languages ​​at the University of Barcelona with Antoni Badia i Margarit and Martí de Riquier and passed his Licentiate in 1951. He received his Ph.D. in the following year at the University of Madrid with a dissertation on the dialect of his native city of Castelló.

After that, he got a scholarship and went to Louvain and Zurich, where he met some of the most prestigious European Romanists such as Sever Pop. The Swiss philologist Walther von Wartburg struck him as a lecturer in Spanish at the University of Basel in front, where he taught since then. Colon was gradually promoted: 1959 Privatdozent, 1963 University teachers and 1967 professor. Since 1997 he is professor emeritus. He was a visiting professor at the University of Strasbourg ( 1968-1972 ) and the Autonomous University of Barcelona ( 1973-74 ).

Colon was a member of the Real Academia de las Buenas Letras of Barcelona and the Commission support the works of Ramon Llull. He is Director of consultant Els Nostres Classics collection and the editors of the magazine Estudis de Literatura Catalanes Llengua i. He is an honorary advisor to the International Society for Catalan language and literature ( he was president from 1976 to 1982 ) and member of the Institute of Catalan Studies.
