History

The DKFZ was founded in 1964 as a national research institution, foundation officer was the Heidelberg surgeon Karl Heinrich Bauer, whose initiative the emergence of the DKFZ is due. In 1975, the DKFZ member of the Association of the major research institutions ( AGF), from 1995, the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres arose. 1977 occurred at the DKFZ of the German Research Foundation (DFG), 1979, was a founding member of the Regional Cooperation network Tumor Center Heidelberg / Mannheim.

The state of Baden -Württemberg is the founder of the DKFZ. It also carries a 10% share in the financing, the main cost object is the federal government with a share of 90%. In 1992 the building of Applied Tumor Virology (INF 242) was inaugurated in 2002 in the Technology Park 3 the genome research building (INF 580). 2007 acquired the German Cancer Research Center, the building INF 581 in the Technology Park 3

On October 6, 2008 the long-time CEO Harald zur Hausen was awarded for his work on the papilloma virus of Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Research

Currently, 73 departments, clinical cooperation units and research groups are assigned to seven temporary furnished main research areas:

  • Cell and Tumor Biology
  • Functional and structural genomics
  • Cancer Risk Factors and Prevention
  • Tumor Immunology
  • Imaging and Radiation Oncology
  • Infections and cancer
  • Translational Cancer Research

Research Group at the DKFZ are connected according to the American model with a " tenure track ". Currently, 17 research groups conducting research at the DKFZ.

Seven central units are with their services to all employees of the DKFZ available: genome and proteome, microscopy, Information Technology, Chemical Biology Core Facility, animal husbandry, library.

PhD students at the DKFZ get in the " Helmholtz International Graduate School of Cancer Research " a structured training after an interdisciplinary Currikulum.

The DKFZ leads to the Cancer Registry Regulation, the epidemiological cancer registry Baden- Württemberg to the state cancer registry law.

Two collaborating centers of the World Health Organization (World Health Organization, WHO) assist them in Tobacco Control and nuclear medicine.

From 1966 to 1999, the TRIGA research reactor was operated at the DKFZ Heidelberg. In the summer of 2008, a 7- tesla magnetic resonance was taken in a purpose built building in use for research purposes.

Collaborations and alliances

National

National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg: The NCT was founded on the model of American " Comprehensive Cancer Center" is supported by the German Cancer Research Center, the University Hospital of Heidelberg and the German Cancer Aid. The German Cancer Aid promotes the NCT since 2007 as oncological center. The NCT combines interdisciplinary patient care with translational cancer research.

DKFZ ZMBH Alliance: The Alliance was established in 2007 with the Center for Molecular Biology of Heidelberg University (ZMBH ) is a new model of cooperation between non-university research center and university.

HI -STEM: The Heidelberg Institute for Stem Cell Technology and Experimental Medicine (HI -STEM ) is a collaboration of academic science and the private sector. The aim of this " public private partnership " is the therapeutic possibilities that arise from stem cell research, to examine clinically and patents to protect and exploit.

German Consortium for Translational Cancer Research: The German Cancer Research Center is networking nationwide with seven university partner locations (Berlin, Dresden, Essen / Dusseldorf, Frankfurt / Mainz, Freiburg, Munich and Tübingen).

Internationally

  • DKFZ -MOST (Ministry of Science and Technology) cooperation program in cancer research ( since 1976)
  • Joint research units with the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale
  • Sister Institution Agreement with MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas ( since 2008)

In addition, individual contacts consist of more than 150 university and non -university research institutions abroad.

Industrial cooperation

Strategic alliances with Siemens Healthcare for the development of new imaging and radiotherapeutic procedures, and with Bayer HealthCare for the development of innovative anti-cancer agents.
