Otmar Wiestler

Otmar Dieter Wiestler ( born November 6, 1956 in Freiburg im Breisgau) is a German physician, professor at Heidelberg University and Chairman of the Foundation Board of the German Cancer Research Center ( DKFZ).

Career

From 1975 to 1981 Wiestler studied at the Albert -Ludwigs- University of Freiburg. His license to practice medicine, he received in 1981. Afterwards it was until 1984, assistant physician in the Department of Neuropathology, University of Freiburg, the people stood under the direction of Paul Kleihues and Benedict. In Freiburg he was also his doctorate in 1984 with summa cum laude. For three years he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California in San Diego in the field of pathology at Gernot Walter. From 1987 to 1992 he was first assistant physician, and later senior physician at the Department of Neuropathology at the Institute of Pathology of the University Hospital Zurich at Paul Kleihues. In 1989, he headed the department on an interim basis. In 1990 he was habilitated in Zurich for the field of pathology. From 1992 to 2003 he was professor of neuropathology (C4 ) at the University Hospital in Bonn and was director of the Institute of Neuropathology.

From 2002 to 2003 Wiestler was also Managing Director of LIFE & BRAIN medical GmbH in Bonn. On 1 January 2004, he was Chairman and Scientific Member of the Foundation Board of the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg as successor to Harald zur Hausen.

He became known to a wider public through his personal commitment to stem cell research in Germany.

Awards

April 8, 2005 Wiestler received the Order of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

On October 20, 2012 Wiestler an honorary doctorate (Doctor Honoris Causa, Dr. hc ) in the field of medicine was awarded by the University of Tübingen.

Publications

Wiestler has made several hundred publications in predominantly clinical- neuropathological journals. He is different journals in the Editorial Board.
