U 2513 XXI was a German U- boat of the Kriegsmarine and the type entered service on 12 October 1944. The submarine was used until the capitulation on 8 May 1945 not for patrols and went after the Second World War in the possession of the United States Navy on.

Technology

It was one of the first XXI U- boats of the type which were fitted with significantly larger batteries and more powerful electric motors. Thus, it was a real underwater vehicle. The favorable hydrodynamic shape allowed him an underwater speed of 16.5 knots and a cruising speed of near-silent under water at 5.5 knots.

History

Navy and surrender

The keel laying of the submarine took place at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg on 19 July 1944. On 12 October 1944, was put into service with Lieutenant Commander Hans Bungards. On 27 April 1945 Bungards was replaced by Commander Erich Topp, however, who commanded the submarine less than two weeks.

U- 2513 never went while on duty for the Navy to patrol. On 8 May 1945 Topp capitulated and gave the command to the Norwegian captain hoarding. On May 20, reached U- 2513 Oslo, and was then brought to Lishally in Northern Ireland, where it arrived on June 7. In August 1945, the submarine was transferred to the United States.

United States Navy

A year after the transfer of the submarine in Charleston was overtaken in South Carolina, which lasted from August to September 1946. On September 24th, it left Charleston with the aim of Key West, Florida. The next day, the submarine began his service with the United States Navy, the submarine design in the next six months underwent placement tests and has been involved in the development of submarine tactics of the United States. Based on the results of the investigation of U 2513 and U 3008 was the Greater Underwater Propulsion Power Program ( Guppy ) started to modernize the U- boat fleet.

On November 21, 1946 Harry S. Truman was a visit to the U- 2513 the first American president, who were riding in a submarine. The boat plunged 130 meters deep with the President, with him, the new snorkel was demonstrated.

On March 15, 1947 U- 2513 left Key West to the north along the coast of New England and reached Portsmouth (New Hampshire) on March 22. Here, the ship remained until September 8, and then launched several operations of Portsmouth and New London (Connecticut), under the direction of the Commander for Submarines, Atlantic Fleet for six weeks. It ended operations on October 15, and put off from New London to return to Key West. Five days later, she joined in Key West again and continued it until the summer of 1949.

Mid- June 1949 U- 2513 left Key West and drove over Norfolk ( Virginia) to Portsmouth, where it was removed from service in July 1949. It remained at Portsmouth until August 1951 and was then returned to Key West. On September 2, 1951 ordered the Chief of Naval Operations, the sinking of the submarine during a rocket tests by the destroyer USS Robert A. Owens (DD -827 ) on 7 October 1951. The shipwreck was 23 nautical miles northeast of the Dry Tortugas (70 miles west of Key West) sunk and is located about 65 m under water. It is accessible by divers, but is due to the depth and the location abseitigen rarely upset.
