Gerold Schwarzenbach

Gerold Schwarzenbach ( born March 15, 1904 in Horgen, † May 20 1978 in Zurich ) was a Swiss chemist.

Schwarzenbach grew up in Horgen. He studied chemistry at the ETH Zurich and received his PhD in 1928 with his dissertation studies on the salt formation of mordant dyes. From 1930 to 1955 he was a lecturer and later professor of analytical and specific inorganic chemistry at the University of Zurich. Then researched Schwarzenbach at Iowa State College and then at the ETH Zurich, until he retired in 1973.

One of his most important research topics was the coordination chemistry. So Schwarzenbach was heavily involved in the research of EDTA, one of the ligands still mostly used. In 1963 he was awarded the Marcel Benoist Prize 1971 awarded him an honorary doctorate by the University of Bern.
