Sudan Plated Lizard ( Broadleysaurus major)

Schildechsen ( Gerrhosauridae ) are a family lizards from the group of Skinkartigen ( Scincomorpha ).

Features

They look like armored skinks. Your body is usually more or less flattened, hardly dropped the head from the neck. The back is covered with arranged in longitudinal and transverse rows thick, rectangular, solid but never thorny scales. The belly is weichhäutig. Between the back and belly is a fine-grained scaly longitudinal fold, which enables a strong elongation of the body. Schildechsen be 15 to 70 inches long. The tail is usually relatively long.

Distribution and habitat

Schildechsen live in Africa, south of the Sahara, and Madagascar. Most of the approximately 35 species live on rocks in dry, sandy habitats or in open grassland. The Malagasy genera Tracheloptychus and Zonosaurus also live in forests and often in watercourses.

System

Schildechsen are close relatives of the belt lizards ( Cordylidae ) and in older classifications sometimes united as a family Gerrhosaurinae with them.
