Gerrit Y. Lansing

Gerrit Yates Lansing ( * August 4, 1783 in Albany, New York, † January 3, 1862 ) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1831 and 1837 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Gerrit Yates Lansing was born about a month before the end of the Revolutionary War in Albany and grew up there. He pursued classical antiquity Sciences and graduated in 1800 from Union College in Schenectady. Lansing studied law. His admission to the bar in 1804 and he then began to practice in Albany. In 1807 he worked as a clerk ( clerk ) in the New York State Assembly. He was then 1816-1823 Judge of the Probate Court ( Court of Probate ). In 1829 he was elected Regent of the University of the State of New York - a position which he held until his death. He was elected on 31 October 1842 Chancellor ( chancellor ).

Politically, he was a member of the Jacksonian Group. In the congressional elections of 1830 for the 22th Congress, he was in the tenth electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Ambrose Spencer on March 4th, 1831. After two successful re-election he resigned in 1836 to run again and was eliminated after March 3, 1837 from the Congress of.

Between 1854 and 1862 he was president of the Albany Savings Bank. He was 1859 president of the Albany Insurance Co. - a position which he held until 1862. On January 3, 1862, he died in Albany and was then buried in the Albany Rural Cemetery. He was the son of Abraham G. Lansing, and nephew of John Lansing junior.
