Gershom Carmichael

Gershom Carmichael (* about 1672 in London ();? † 1729 ) was a Scottish philosopher.

Carmichael was probably born in London, the son of a Presbyterian pastor. In 1691, he completed his studies at Edinburgh University, and three years later the master ( teacher) at the University of Glasgow. This office was in 1727 converted into a professorship of moral philosophy.

The philosopher Sir William Hamilton described him as "the true founder of the Scottish philosophy." Carmichael wrote Breviuscula Introductio ad Logicam, a treatise on logic and the psychology of the intellect. He was a teacher by Francis Hutcheson.
