Gertrude Hoffmann (actress)

Gertrude W. Hoffman, also Trude Hoffmann and Gertrude Hoffman, actually Eliza Gertrude Wesselhoeft, ( born May 17, 1871 in Heidelberg, German Empire, † February 13, 1968 in Santa Barbara, California, United States) was an actress of German descent, the in a long line of American films took over the role of grandmothers, elderly virgins or older wives.

Life

Her acting career began in 1917 in Germany. Rolls of film in the U.S., it took until she was past the age of sixty. She had roles in the criminal case Thelma Jordon and women's prison, both of which appeared in 1950 in the cinemas. They also played in 1953 in the movie War of the Worlds with. She had a role in the American television series My Little Margie in which she played an elderly neighbor on.

Short-term notoriety she gained during the shark attacks off the coast of New Jersey ( 1916), when the New York Times reported about her encounter with a shark on the beach at Coney Iceland. Hoffman boasted at that time, to have the presence of mind to hit the water and so sold the shark.

Gertrude W. Hoffman is not to be confused with the dancer and choreographer Gertrude Hoffman ( 1885-1966 ).
