Gertrude Liebhart

Gertrude Liebhartsgasse (* October 26, 1928, † 27 November 2008) is a former Austrian canoeist. She won the silver medal at the 1952 Olympics.

At the Olympic Games in London in 1948 and in Helsinki in 1952, a competition was only for the ladies each discharged, the one over 500 meters. At the Games in London, the competitions were held on the Thames at Henley. In one won the Danish Karen Hoff, was third Fritzi Schwingl from Austria. Four days after the final one was also held the world championship in non-Olympic double kayak in Henley. It won Karen Hoff together with Bodil Svendsen front of the Czechoslovak boat; Bronze received Fritzi Schwingl and Gertrude Liebhartsgasse. Two years later found the Canoe World Championships in Copenhagen. In the double kayak won the Finns Sylvi Saimo and Greta Grönholm, behind received Schwingl and Liebhartsgasse the silver medal. 1952 in Helsinki found the canoe competitions in the Taivalahti Bay held in Helsinki. Sylvi Saimo won the race on home soil four tenths of a second ahead of Gertrude Liebhartsgasse three seconds after the third-place finisher, Nina Sawina came from the Soviet Union, to the finish.

Overall, Austria won at the Olympic Summer Games in 1952 two medals, both in Canoeing, except for the silver medal for Gertrude Liebhartsgasse there was a bronze medal for Max robbery and Herbert Wiedermann in double kayak. After Fritzi Schwingl and Gertrude Liebhartsgasse it took 56 years until another Austrian canoeist awarded an Olympic medal. Violetta Oblinger - Peters in 2008 won a bronze medal in canoe slalom.
