Gestodene is a synthetic progestin of the third generation, which is used as a hormonal contraceptive for birth control.

It is a selective, highly potent progestagen antigonadotrop. The antigonadotropic effect is about three times stronger than that of levonorgestrel. As the only progestagen it has a aldosteronantagonistischen effect, which is caused by a high affinity for the progesterone receptor. It also has minimal androgenic residual effect and a weak anti-estrogenic effect. Gestodene is exclusively in combination with ethinyl estradiol in the form of capsules and tablets on the market.
